Q: Who or What inspires you? Why? 

A: I'm inspired by the little magical moments that are hiding in plain sight all around us - whether it's a crack in the sidewalk in the perfect shape of a star or the surprised smile on the face of a stranger who I randomly wave at. It's those little pieces in time that are so fleeting, the details of the world around us that we could very well miss if we don't pay enough attention, the connections that we can make with others with just the tiniest bit of effort that really make me feel lucky to be alive.

Q: What does creativity mean to you? 

A: Creativity means letting go and tapping into the wellspring of energy that I think we all have access to if we cultivate it, give it room to grow and commit ourselves to expressing it in whatever ways that speak to us. For me, creativity is really a way of life. It informs absolutely everything I do because if I ignore it or fail to nurture it, I wind up miserable.

Q: What is your favorite place in the world? 

A: Big Sur, CA

Q: What do you love most in the world? 

A: My friends and family.

Q: What are the causes you care about? How do you actively support these causes with your time, money or other method/resource? 

A: Social justice. Community building. The arts. I'm the Director of Development for the Echo Park Time Bank and the California Federation of Time Banks, organizations that circumvent the mainstream economy by matching untapped resources (social capital) with unmet community needs. I sit on the board for Law Project LA, an organization that provides outreach, education and advocacy to help people navigate their job search with dignity, determination and hope after suffering a criminal conviction. For nearly a decade I worked with youth at-risk in school and juvenile justice settings, creating a national best-practice youth court program, developing social justice curriculum for high school and founding a public art program for graffiti convicted teens for the city of San Diego, CA. I helped develop The Women's International Perspective (www.thewip.net), a website that publishes news, world opinion and commentary by women from around the world. I recently finished writing a book for Teen Truth - an organization dedicated to giving youth a voice - designed to help teens, teachers and parents address bullying and school violence, communicate honestly, develop empathy and ultimately make a difference in their communities. I'm also currently the President and Creative Director of the Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce where my focus is on helping local business thrive by becoming more interdependent and connected.

A: What was your biggest moment of 2011?

Early last week I decided I would start writing about This American Life. I used to write a weekly commentary back in the day and thought it was always a great part of my week why not continue to share my thoughts on it!

Well I listened to the episode Nobody's Family is Going To Change and it reminded me of all of the secrets that families keep. Recently I have created a circle of trust with a group of friends so that we have a forum for honesty in our lives. After I listened to the episode I thought about all the secrets that my family has kept and will continue to keep. I then called one family member to find an other ones phone number. I was immediately told to keep a secret. Jeez I thought is this really happening? I will keep the secret from these pages to respect privacy etc etc, but guess what I have a circle of trust...I can unburden my heart to whether or not my familia ever changes:)

Q: Who or What inspires you? Why?  

A: Movement and sensation. I believe that all creativity is rooted at the most basic level in movement. Touch, unlike sound and sight, is not filtered by the thalamus en route to the brain (I was a neuroscience major) and is therefore the most direct contact to the present moment that we have.

Q:   What does creativity mean to you? 

A: Creativity is an active form of mindfulness requiring that you act from a state of acute focus and mental rigor. Expressing your creativity reminds you that you are Love/God and that there is an organizing principle to our brain that is way beyond our ability to understand or plan for and as such is a uniquely humbling experience.

Q: What is your favorite place in the world?  

A: bed.. OK, I have 2: Xilitla (SLP) Mexico and the southwest coast of Ireland.

Q: What do you love most in the world? 

A: the sounds of nature

Q: What are the causes you care about? How do you actively support these causes with your time, money or other method/resource? 

A: homeless rights, immigration rights, indigenous rights, prisoner's rights.
I keep abreast of developments by listening to radio and podcasts of news stations that I trust like BBC World Service, Pacifica, etc. Most importantly, I love to talk experientially about our society-- particularly with people whom I don't agree with or who may not have thought about the cause much.

Bio:
Kindred is a Sculptor and Lighting Designer. She started sculpting in 1989 at the LA County High School for the Arts. She received her BA from Hampshire College where she studied the Neuropsychology of the Creative Process and designed the groundplans for a gigantic walk-through brain. She has also studied at Chautauqua School of Art, the New York Studio School for Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture, and the Universität der Kunste, Berlin. While living in Berlin in 2001, she served as Technical Director and Lighting Designer for Dock 11 Dance Studio, created puppets for a touring children's show Max und Moritz, showed her work in a 2-person art exhibit at GASAG- the German gas company, and created a sculpture for a meditation room for HIV patients. Since returning to LA, she has designed lights for Helios Dance Theater, Body Traffic, String Theory, and the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. Her artwork has shown at The Hive Gallery, UCLA Kerckhoff Art Gallery and was recently featured in the motion picture "Chronicals of a Love Unfound".  For 6 years she's served as the Lighting Production Supervisor for the UCLA Theater Department, but is leaving her job in January to spend more time with her 4-year old daughter and other creative ventures.

Q: Who or What inspires you? Why?

A: I am inspired by the power of love and the idea that we human beings are more powerful than we know. Maybe it's because I come from an immigrant family where people came here with nothing and had to make something of themselves.

Q: What does creativity mean to you?

A: Creativity is the same idea. Growing something where nothing previously existed. Creativity is giving birth to a vision that came straight from your soul. It really is magical if we think about it.

Q: What is your favorite place in the world?

A: I love being under a shady tree, sitting on the grass, eating something delicious and sharing interesting conversations and beautiful energy with a person or persons I adore.

Q: What do you love most in the world?

A: I love my family. I dated someone who hated both of his parents and all of his siblings and I knew right away that we would never understand each other. Of course I have extended family, as we all do, that I don't particularly care for, but I try to speak with my parents daily. I think that my sister and my brother are the bees knees. I also have a bunch of half siblings that I am getting to know.

Q: What are the causes you care about? How do you actively support these causes with your time, money or other method/resource?

A: I care about women's empowerment. This past weekend I spoke at the NYC Women's Empowerment Summit with Vivica Fox. I have also created a museum based film festival in conjunction with Eve Ensler's VDay. I give time and money to related causes.

A: I love this series. How did you come up with it?

@NMK: I always have a list of people I want to meet. Mostly I just want to shake their hand and say hello. Some people I have a few questions for. I thought if I had an elevator ride with someone what are the 5 questions I'd want to ask them.

1) I am inspired by women who live life on their terms. Women who have decided to live their lives OUTSIDE the box, unapologetically. I am inspired by women who take chances, who live more and worry less, who love hard, who are vulnerable enough to experience life without kid gloves. I am inspired by women who choose to LIVE this life and don't allow life to live them! I loved these women because they rise above the norm, they don't settle for mediocrity, they don't follow rules, they make them. The barometer they measure themselves against is the one that they have created. They live free, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. That's my definition of a GREAT life.

Q: What does creativity mean to you? 

2) Creativity for and to me is the manifestation of a unique individual greatness that lies within all of us. It is the sometimes, visible and sometimes tangible expression of ones ability to communicate from the inside, out; to give life to a vision and allow it a life of it's own.

Q: What is your favorite place in the world?
 
3) If peace were a place, it would be my residence. I believe that "at peace" is the best place in the world, because no matter where within it(this world) you go, you maintain stability and equilibrium in all that you do. This ensures maximum joy and happiness in all situations.

Q: What do you love most in the world? 

4) I love the fact that we have the ability to recreate our dreams daily. We can reinvent, course correct, change, transform, heal and be better, with each breath we take, is an opportunity to get it right. This is beautiful, and I absolutely LOVE it.

Q: What are the causes you care about? How do you actively support these causes with your time, money or other method/resource? 

5) The causes I champion currently are mental illness in women, and breast cancer. The first gift I have to offer is information. I believe that POWER is in information. Giving women the tools and providing resources is of great importance to me. I lend my energy and time through my talk show, providing a platform for women to come through and have their voice heard. I coach women one-on-one and in groups. I educate, encourage and empower them to manifest their destiny and live their best life. Teaching women that they are in control of ONLY themselves is one of the hardest lessons we have to learn. By sharing information and providing a space, whether it be a physical space, or emotional space to explore, share and heal, I give women the greatest gift of all, themselves. They find within them their weaknesses, their pain, but most importantly their unique voice and their joy, and for both them and I, it is an inexplicable reward and a gift that keeps on giving!

7) Why did I choose to go into women's empowerment?

A: It has been my experience that women have the worst habit of holding on and holding in their pain, disappointment, resentment and worry. As a result women are experiencing mental illness at disproportionate rates. This includes "functional mental illness". Yes, there is a such thing. They are the women who manage their day to day duties, mother, career woman, wife, etc... but behind closed doors, they are deteriorating internally. I fight this fight for them, for their silent tears, breaking hearts and emotional frailty. I give a voice to the unheard women, suffering in silence. I fight not only for them, but with them.

Q: Who or What inspires you? Why?

A: Creativity inspires me (see below). 

Q: What does creativity mean to you?

A: Creativity to me is being resourceful with limited resources. It is seeing the potential of something you might encounter everyday, but utilizing it for a different purpose to solve a problem.

A couple of things that encapsulate creativity to me:

Anything at REI (like this one-cup coffee maker!)

Whether it's an idea, song, object, house, recipe, I love experiencing – and creating – new modes of thinking for people and our community. We can't always rely on civic leaders and the government to accurately – and speedily – fix our problems. Sometimes, we just have to get creative, and get things done! It is those instances of informal creative crusades and initiatives that really inspire me everyday.

Q: What is your favorite place in the world?

A: I love places that encourage communities to interact with each other, such as in the dense heart of a city. Preferably on a bicycle. The first CicLAvia was one of the most memorably joyous days of my life riding through the city with my fellow Angelenos.

Q: What do you love most in the world?

A: I love Maps. And Rice. And Elephants. And connecting people together.

Q: What are the causes you care about? How do you actively support these causes with your time, money or other method/resource?

A: I care about causes that connect our community, in all its forms, together. Relationships, interdependency, and mutual respect for your fellow brother (or sistah!) are the most important driving forces in my life. Whether it's buying locally at farmers' markets, helping to serve meals at the Downtown Women's Shelter, or taking part in an impromptu birthday game of cardboard gladiators, I believe that as long as you are engaging your community, and – ultimately – pursuing actions which will make that community pleasantly more sustainable for future generations, then you've got yourself a friend in me.

Q: What question do you want to ask me?

A: How did you end up in Los Angeles?

@NMK: I took a plane:) When I was a kid I watched skateboarding on Saturday mornings. I thought that everyone in LA had a concrete bowl in their backyard where you could skateboard year round. For me this meant LA was this place filled with sunshine where everything was good. Plus my mother always said we would move here, but I got here on my own.

A: How many subway-themed mugs do you own?

Q: Who or What inspires you? Why?

A: I'm inspired by people who get things done. By answering the inner call to action, these people show everyone that anyone can do it. Human beings are not really driven by money -- beyond meeting basic needs -- what really drives us is making the world a better place, realizing our vision and expressing our individual genius, our special gifts. I love seeing people discover their special gift and invest everything they have into putting it to use. It's inspiring to be with people who are fulfilled by what they do. I know a lot of these people through the time banks -- time banks attract people who like getting things done.

Q: What does creativity mean to you?

A: Creativity is our gift from God. It is a form of grace. When we face a difficulty -- in life, in science, in art -- the solution is not obvious. Maybe we bang our head against it for a while, but we can't figure it out. But when we relax, and let inspiration come, that is when we've connected to something beyond ourselves. It isn't our conscious mind that gives us creative solutions. We can learn to open this gateway by placing faith in inspiration to solve problems, and by believing in our unlimited access to creative solutions.

Q: What is your favorite place in the world?

A: The kitchen.

Q: What do you love most in the world?

A: Truth. And comedy.

Q: What are the causes you care about? How do you actively support these causes with your time, money or other method/resource?

A: I'm involved in several local time banks - Whittier, Arroyo and Echo Park. The time banks model a paradigm shift from charitable work to reciprocal or co-productive relationships that could save our economy. Co-production also promotes respect for and equality between all people. I love the relationships I build with fellow time bankers -- real friendships based on working together. I can feel my community woven in strength around my life.

Food access is my life's work, with a side order of waste reduction. Having all these skilled people around to help out gives me freedom to develop projects in food access. For example, several friends and I cook a weekly vegan community dinner at HM157 in Lincoln Heights. The dinners develop relationships at the table among food activists and time bankers; our dinners also build the food access network through the monthly fundraiser dinners. I'm involved in a Neighborhood Fruit Redistribution Project, the Time Bank Produce Booth at the Altadena Urban Farmers Market, an urban farm, and grocery store dumpster diving. These projects identify and develop access to food sources for a future Time Bank Grocery Store.

Q: What question do you want to ask me?

A: Will you help me get the Time Bank Garden Group to collaborate with us on one community dinner in September? I want to feature their produce on the menu to demonstrate backyards and gardening groups as viable sources of local organic produce.

@NMK: We just had our monthly Barn Raising and I would say that the dinner would be perfect for the next harvest that we have. Coming up soon...

A: My wished for question: What do you need help with right now?

We'd like to introduce your neighborhood to tasty, accessible localvore cuisine. Starting in September, the weekly vegan Tuesday Dinners at HM157 are bringing the dinner to you! Three weeks out of the month, we'll be visiting locations in Highland Park, Echo Park, Eagle Rock, Silverlake, Pasadena, Altadena, Mt. Washington, Los Feliz, Glassell Park and South Pasadena. Q: Who or What inspires you?

A: People who step out of their comfort zone inspire me. Those who take the high road, the hard road, the path of most resistance. People that dare to embrace the changing state of life and make something livable. Those that dare to change their perspectives and open their minds regularly.

Q: Why?

A: Because I believe that life is a big experiment. We are all just throwing spaghetti at the fridge wall to see if it sticks. It is so easy to make “safety” the goal, through money, relationships etc. But that’s just an illusion. Change is the most constant thing and I find those who are honest about this and embracing it the most interesting and inspirational.

Q: What does creativity mean to you?

A: In my experience, creativity is a state of simultaneous focus and abandon. It’s the place that many visit but can only become truly liberating when self judgment is put aside and everything is allowed and possible.

Q: What is your favorite place in the world?

A: Right now, it’s where I live: Berlin.

A: People.

A: This one is tough right now. I'm currently finding that when you don’t take care of yourself, you don’t have much to give back, so right now I'm working on that. My current cause is relationship, with myself and my world.

Q: Who or What inspires you? Why?

A: Honestly, I am inspired by stewing over the meaning of life -- why we are here and what it is all for. As an artist (and spiritualist) I tend to revel in the divine nuances of human life... of beauty, nature, health, relationships, the powers of simple energy, dreams, heroic acts, big or small, of individuals who spend their lives achieving great feats and helping others, etc. All of these things essentially inspire me and bring context and meaning to my work as an artist/person. Films, travel, and great cooks also inspire me a great deal. Oh yes, and my mother. :)

Q: What does creativity mean to you?

A: Creativity is in everything, in everyone. Without creativity, we die. Creating things is the only way to keep life moving, to be excited about something, to feel essential and even powerful! True artists, whose calling is to heighten or exploit the idea of creativity, are in the business of using their gifts to elicit feeling and/or to shed some sort of perspective on life as we know it. Great artists change lives. Great art tells stories. Some stories document life so well that it sheds considerable light on the histories of human kind! Paintings, sculpture, songs, literature, etc. Its fascinating.

Q: What is your favorite place in the world?

A: A stage or a dance floor. You can find those anywhere.

Q: What do you love most in the world?

A: Laughing really, really hard until I cant breathe. And this usually involves great company. Simply the best. And, the sun.

Q: What are the causes you care about? How do you actively support these causes with your time, money or other method/resource?

A: I care a lot about human rights, health, environmental issues and education. That's a lot of things... but its true. On a personal level, I do my best to purchase good, local food (tell others about it) and recycle everything. I have also taught acting and music to many a gang banger in my day. :)

Q: What question do you want to ask me?

A: I prepared a statement, and that statement is: Nyenye, you are the bomb.

A: Do i like long walks on the beach, fine dining, kool-aid, social experiments, and sexy people? yes, yes, sometimes yes, what does that mean?, and hell to the yeyah!

@NMK: beach = yes! fine dining = yes! kool-aid = no. social experiments = ahhnn. sexy people = what does sexy mean exactly?

Brit is an actor, vocalist, magazine editor, event producer and virtual marketer. She graduated from NYU's TISCH School of the Arts as a University Scholar, and has since traveled around the US, Europe, West Africa and Brazil performing, learning and teaching. Q: Who or What inspires you? Why?

A: -People just being people. I know it sounds trite but it's true. It's similar to watching an ant colony; we do and forever will behave the same way. Yes, one of us might travel outside the confines and really switch it up every once in a while but for the most part, we truly are creatures of habit. This I find inspiring because... wow! I guess it's more interesting than inspiring. And I guess this means I need to work on what inspires me. Get back to me when I have kids. I'm sure that'll become my stock answer ;)

Q: What does creativity mean to you?

A: -Freedom.

Q: What is your favorite place in the world?

A: -At the moment, strangely enough, the Mississippi Delta where my father grew up. It's a place that psychologically keeps me on my toes. An extremely complicated history landed there with a thud and is still pulsating very near to the surface waiting to consume you at any moment. At least that's how it makes me feel. As a mall dwelling, beach cruising Southern California native the place may as well exist in another space and time and on some levels it does. All of this set against lush, green backdrops... just oppressively beautiful.

Q: What do you love most in the world?

A: -My mom and dad.

Q: What are the causes you care about? How do you actively support these causes with your time, money or other method/resource?

A: -Feeding the homeless. Although I'm not involved as much as I'd like to be, I try to volunteer around town as much as possible.

Q: What question do you want to ask me?

A: - What were you wearing the first time you fell in love?

Q: What question do you wish I asked you and what is your answer to it?

A: -What is the best question and answer you've ever heard?

AR: An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy.

"It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

@NMK: I asked a friend's mom (a professional writer) how to write better dialogue. She told me to become a better listener:)

This book by Jimmy Williams is a hands on guide to gardening. If you have a farm or an apartment this is good information you can use. He focuses on planting in the southern California climate. This is where he is based. If you live in Los Angeles he sells seedlings at 2 Farmer's Markets.

I am a non-gardener running a gardening group and read this as a primer on what happens "out there".
It's an easy read and if you don't want to DIY you can always hire someone. Read this book first and start making planting decisions on paper before heading "out there".;)

A: People who observe the world around them and form their own opinions. An old photo of Malcolm X with the words "NO SELL OUT" on it hangs in my home. Every day when I wake up he is there to remind me that I have no choice but to come to my own
conclusions, to see what I see.

Q: WHAT DOES CREATIVITY MEAN TO YOU?

A: It's a space where I'm both focused and open to the movement around me.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN THE WORLD?

A: My grandparent's house, forests, the darkroom & the dance floor.

Q: WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST IN THE WORLD?

A: The beat. No matter how bad a day could come my way, if I hear a good beat, everything changes for the
better.

Q: WHAT ARE THE CAUSES YOU CARE ABOUT? HOW DO YOU ACTIVELY SUPPORT THESE CAUSES WITH YOUR TIME, MONEY OR OTHER METHOD/RESOURCE?

A: I care deeply about helping people without homes who are often struggling with mental health and addiction issues. I volunteer with three homeless organizations – an overnight shelter, a soup kitchen, and a street outreach team. For me there is no "us" or "them"…we all suffer and it's just a matter of how I'm going to help others in need.

Q: WHAT QUESTION DO YOU WANT TO ASK ME?

A: Do you think we should withdraw from Afghanistan now that Osama bin Laden has been killed?

@NMK: We have all been taught something here in this moment. Hopefully we have all learned what that something is.

Q: Who or What inspires you? Why?

A: The amazing people I have met since getting involved in time banking inspire me
everyday. There are so many local activists doing big and small things to make
our communities stronger, to take back power from corporations, and to help
craft a better world. They remind me that there is no avenue in my life where
my ideals and optimism can't be integrated.

Q: What does creativity mean to you?

A: For me creativity means being an active and nimble participant in my life. It's
not being afraid to shift perspectives and look at things in a completely
different way, but most importantly it's not being afraid to do and to make, and
to create everyday.

Q: What is your favorite place in the world?

A: I think it's my garden. It's been such a great teacher. I've learned so many
things about nature, about myself, my body, and my community all through my
time in my garden.

Q: What do you love most in the world?

A: There are so many things I love in the world and all of them are free.

Q: What are the causes you care about? How do you actively
support these causes with your time, money or other method/resource?

A: When I boil it down, all the causes I care about deal with fairness, community,
and basic rights, as I see them anyway. I'm concerned with economic and social
justice and building community and so in March 2009 started the Arroyo Time
Bank. Most of my time is spent supporting the growth and development of the
organization, its projects, and its mission. Through the time bank, I've become
involved in a lot of activism regarding food, specifically access to healthy,
natural, sustainable, local food. The Arroyo Time Bank helped organize the
Altadena Urban Farmers market, has organized a neighborhood fruit
picking/sharing project, and has held many potlucks and other garden projects.
I've also been pretty involved with the NELA Transition movement, which deals
with transitioning from oil dependence and with the Arroyo Food Co-op, all of
these organizations have many shared members and each organization is a
different expression of a similar sentiment, which is too create a more
sustainable, healthier, more fair, and more resilient local community.

Q: What question do you want to ask me?

A: What inspires you my dear?

@NMK: LOVE

Q: What question do you wish I asked you and what is your answer to it?

A: "What is something new you learned this year? How has it impacted you?"

JC: And my answer is, I just learned the Swedish term "logom" which apparently has
no direct English translation, but basically means, "just enough," "good
enough." I think it's a good sentiment to hold on to. I feel like as Americans,
we're all about "the most" "the best" "getting the most bang for our buck." We
have a strange obsession with hyperbole and extremes, and I think it leads to a
lot of burnout, depression, hoarding, debt etc. What's wrong with just enough?
When I was younger I used to beat myself up about not being "good enough" or
not having enough or the right things, and it took me a while to realize that
I've always been good enough and whatever I have, well that's what I have, and
that's fine. When I think of logom, I think of acceptance, sharing resources,
and taking just what is necessary. It's so lovely.

@NMK: I have learned I don't need a lot of "stuff". I do need experiences and people. To that end I have become more involved in time banking (skills exchanges) and building friendships. I feel more centered, creative and clear about all of my goals. I have started a number of projects and they are all coming into fruition (including this weekly interview post).

A: Lois Arkin inspires me because she has accomplished so much. She is the founder of the L.A. Eco-Village and Executive Director of CRSP (Cooperative Resources & Services Project). She has been a mentor and an incredible resource. Her support of the EPTB as been so valuable and I appreciate her knowledge and experience very much.

My Mom also inspires me because she is a talented writer, an incredible chef, meticulously organized, hilarious, generous and my best friend.

Q: What does creativity mean to you?

A: Creativity means problem solving. Bringing something to life. Children are pure creativity.

Q: What is your favorite place in the world?

A: Los Angeles! It's an amazing city full of inspiring people.

A: Eating good food with my family and friends, CicLAvia, human potential, sweets, the wonderful kids in my life, getting inspired, sharing ideas, the smell of Eucalyptus trees, stories, the unknown, Joe's O's, post-it notes, all of the revolutions that are happening right now, all the teachers in my life, optimism, love.

Today Lenore and I met on Sunset & Vine. We watched a protest in action. The turnout filled the corner. Many citizens honked their agreement with protesters. A few others shouted their support from their vehicles.

All in all it was cloudy and interesting. Apparently corporations are paying fewer and fewer taxes. In fact some are getting refunds in the billions.

Q: Who or What inspires you? Why?

A: I'm inspired by regular people. My heroes have always been people I know to do good things. Activists of all kinds have always inspired me. Lately
I've been inspired by people who work hard, stay happy and have very little.

Q: What does creativity mean to you?

A: Creativity is one of the driving forces of humanity. Everyone has different attachments to creativity, but most of the people I know are very much in touch with that urge to do and impact, and that helps drive
the urge in me too.

Q: What is your favorite place in the world?

A: My favorite place in world is Mongolia. I've never been to a place so beautiful, inhabited by beautiful people to match. There's a wildness there, but also an incredible calm. I think about the open spaces, the
people, and the energy of that place every single day.

Q: What do you love most in the world?

A: Connecting with my horse, Squid. He's a living embodiment of my ability to practice patience, confidence, calm, and strength all at once. When I'm
able to tap into those things with him, I feel like I can do anything, and he rewards me with a trust and partnership that I have trouble finding in other areas of my life. Horses are incredibly empathetic.

Q: What are the causes you care about? How do you actively support these causes with your time, money or other method/resource?

A: I was actively involved in the animal liberation movement for many years. I've been vegan for 16 years, and my commitment to activism has changed as
I've grown older. I still support a lot of organizations that I was once involved in, but I find myself less drawn to being overtly "vegan". I try to live those ideals by example and show people that it's not only

The Socialist Party believes strongly in the rights of the poor, the working class, feminism, and ecology. These

Next Stop, Volunteering! The Do Good Bus Makes Community Service Easy (and Fun)

Even without knowing much about them, the name was enough to get us interested in The Do Good Bus. But when we found out that this mobile volunteer unit had been traveling around Los Angeles for the past year, delivering eager do-gooders to causes that needed them, we knew we had to get on board.

Part of the fun of a Do Good experience is that each destination is only revealed once volunteers board the bus, which co-founder Rebecca Pontius thinks removes some of the anxiety from volunteering for the first time. "It takes away the preconceived notions or judgment about what you're going to do," she says. But participants don't go into the experience blind: They're briefed en route and also receive a training session from the organizations themselves. A recent trip took volunteers to a workshop run by 826 LA, where volunteers helped high school seniors write their college essays.

This weekend, you can catch them at the TOMS Give Shop, a week of events sponsored by our friends at TOMS Shoes, which is taking place at Space 15 Twenty in Hollywood. The Do Good Bus will be boarding at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, but this outing has a bit of a twist. Bring your bike—you'll be riding to your service opportunity. 5. What’s the Worst That Could Happen?

One of my favourite stories about social stigma concerns a man who ran into financial difficulties and was unable to keep up the payments on a three-piece suite. He received a letter from the furniture company beginning “Dear Mr Smith, what would your neighbours think if they saw the van coming to collect the furniture from your home because you had failed to keep up with your payments …?”.

He wrote back to them and said “I’ve asked my neighbours what they would think, and they said ‘What a horrible furniture company, I must make a note never to buy anything from them!’"

So sometimes the demons in our mind are more scary than the reality. By taking a positive attitude and showing we won’t be intimidated, we can get people around us on our side.

Today I was in Whole Foods musing about how long I can continue to shop there. I love that place. I grew up in the crunchy granola '80s Health Food stores. Most were not that clean and the selection was pitiful. While I realize WF is not a Health Food store they do carry many items found in them...

But once GMO ingredients are placed on its shelves...what happens then. Many brands label there products non-gmo now, but do I really believe food companies are going to say their products contain genetically modified ingredients? Umm noo. And that means anything labeled Whole Foods 365 is suspect. Ouch, there go my tater puffs.

Today I was the Spokesmodel for HomeBody Botanicals at The Altadena Urban Farmer's Market.
I had a great time demonstrating these wondeful handmade beauty products. My face is in LOVE.

It was great fun participating and engaging in purchases with Time Credits and US Dollars.

Bravo to the Arroyo Time Bank and Zane Grey Estate for putting on the Farmer's Market. It happens every 3rd Sunday of the month from 1p-4p rain or shine. There are food vendors, craft vendors, and goats to pet.

Today I noticed an Olive Oil Vendor at the Farmer's Market. Now this Vendor arrives every Sunday like the other vendors. I however had failed to register the presence of this one person.

Normally I try to make it to the market early, before the crowds arrive. I have my list. I stick to it and I leave. Today I arrived and half the vendors were MIA. It's been raining here and well this is the day after a major holiday.

I wonder what else I have been passing by in my fast lane tunnel vision. What have I closed myself off from? Where have I gone awry? It's rose smelling time.
